Naturmaterial är första val
Olars Ulla largely uses natural materials. Materials that have little impact on nature during production.
The clothes are made from quality materials and the goal is to constantly increase the proportion of environmentally friendly materials. Now Olars Ulla works actively to ensure that all production is done in Europe, from yarn to finished garment.
Here we have collected a little more information about the materials that are in our collections right now and how they are produced.
Flax
Linen fabric is produced from the flax plant. Flax preparation involves preparing the plant in different stages so that the long spinnable fibers inside the stalk are exposed. Flax is one of man's oldest crops and has been cultivated since at least 5000 BC. Compared to cotton, linen is gentler on the environment as the cultivation process and processing require less water. Flax can be grown in cool climates where pests are less prevalent and the amount of pesticides can be minimized. The plant also does not require much fertilization and therefore the impact on the environment during cultivation can be kept low.
Our linen comes from raw material that is grown, woven, treated and dyed in Europe. For each collection, we usually also design at least one own fabric pattern that we print on linen in Europe. The garments are then also sewn in Europe. The long fibers of the linen provide a fabric that can survive for generations if properly cared for. We also love it because it only gets more beautiful the more it's used!
Monochrome
In the collection, we choose between five different coarsenesses to ensure that the natural characteristics of the garment are highlighted in the best way. Black and white linen is a classic for Olars Ulla and is supplemented with new colors that suit the season's collection.
Floral
Our floral patterns can now almost be compared to a perennial, given its recurring and obvious place in every collection. Our printed patterns in the form of flowers and other graphic patterns are designed by our own hands and the fabric is therefore unique to Olars Ulla.
Fishbone
This is a slightly coarser fabric in 100% linen that has become a recurring feature in our autumn collections. The herringbone pattern is available in a neutral natural/black color that goes with almost everything.
Wool
With its properties, wool is a unique raw material and a true functional material. It ventilates, insulates and absorbs at the same time. Air gaps in the material increase the insulation of body heat and keep you warm. The ability to absorb moisture also means that a wool garment does not feel damp and cold against the skin. Wool repels dirt and moisture thanks to the fat lanolin, which covers the fiber. Therefore, wool garments do not need to be washed often, but can be aired with good results in damp weather.
All our wool garments are made of 100% mulesing-free wool. Mulesing, which can occur in wool production, is a procedure that involves scalping the sheep to prevent pest infestation. The method is animal cruelty and is often done without anesthesia.
Merino wool
The wool in our knitted woolen garments is made of fine merino wool.
Wool fibers are measured in microns. In order for the wool not to be perceived as prickly, the value should be below 23 microns. Our wool measures 19.5 microns.
Our knitted garments in the autumn collections are made with a technique called fully-fashion. It mimics the traditional type of knitting where the parts of the garment are knitted into their final form by a knitting machine and then sewn together. This technique is slightly more labor-intensive than cutting the parts out of knitted panels, but results in significantly less waste during production.
All wool tends to pill, especially on areas exposed to friction, such as under the arms. The advantage of wool piles is that they are easily removed without affecting the quality of the garment.
Other materials
-
Viscose jersey
This amazing material that is soft and supple to wear, while providing a perfect balance between style and comfort can be found in all our collections. Black is the base, complemented by white and, in the warmer seasons, also a refreshing color.
Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from wood. The tricot is dyed and knitted within the EU, where the garments are then also sewn. The garments consist of 96% viscose and 4% elastane.
Wool mix (AW24-25)
The garments in the wool mix are dressed with fine details that give the garments that little something extra. Truly a material to cozy up with during the colder seasons. The fabric is durable and made from 80% recycled material.
Organic cotton (AW24-25)
Cotton grows on bushes. It is a difficult plant to grow, which is sensitive both to climate, insect attacks and diseases. Organic cotton is grown without chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Through a form of cultivation with a natural balance between several different plants and the use of natural manure, an environment is created where the humus content in the soil is improved and beneficial small animals and insects can live there. The pests' natural enemies thus reduce the attacks on the plants.
The fabric in our garments marked with organic cotton are produced from 100% organic cotton.
Hemp-Tencel mix (Summer collections)
Hemp has similar qualities to flax. It can be grown in cooler climate zones and resists infestation without pesticides. Hemp can also be advantageously grown in the same place year after year without depleting the soil. Instead, the plant adds nutrients to the soil. Tencel is a fiber extracted from cellulose pulp of wood. It is soft on the skin, has a luxurious shimmer and nice fall.
Denim (SS-24)
The summer collection includes a denim line. The denim fabric gives the raw, untreated impression, but is soft and supple, without being elastic. Very comfortable to wear. The fabric is 100% recycled and contains 53.5% hemp, 43.8% cotton, 1.1% lyocell, 1% viscose, 0.6% polyester.
Recycled denim
To produce this yarn, jeans collected from the waste of used clothes are used. Chains and buttons are removed. The pieces of fabric are then reduced to fibers, which are then spun again into yarn. The yarn is not dyed but retains its original color. This yarn is used in variants of Sipramin and Stolla.
Lining (for linen & wool)
Our lining is a luxurious matte black fabric made from organic cotton and FSC certified viscose. The mix consists of 53% organic cotton and 47% viscose (FSC). As the cotton is organic, it has been grown without the use of artificial pesticides or fertilizers, nor does it contain any genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The viscose, in turn, is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from wood that comes from responsible forestry, i.e. forestry that takes people and the environment into account.
The fabric is woven, treated and dyed within the EU, where the garments are also then sewn.
